Speed limit on busy road blocked by Haringey Council

by Haringey Lib Dems on 17 July, 2012

A 20mph speed limit will not go ahead on a busy road near Finsbury Park after Haringey Council objected to neighbouring Islington Council’s speed reduction scheme it has emerged this week.

Local Liberal Democrats in Haringey and Islington have joined forces to condemn the decision by Haringey Council to block the 20mph scheme on Stroud Green Road – a road which is split between both boroughs.

In Haringey, since 2008 Liberal Democrats have spearheaded a campaign to implement 20mph speed restrictions on all roads.

Islington Council agreed last year that the borough’s main road network should be added to the borough-wide 20mph limit which was introduced from January 2010.

Cllr Richard Wilson, Haringey Liberal Democrat Leader, comments:

It is very disappointing that Haringey Council has sought to scupper this road safety plan. I’m concerned that no local residents were included in this decision.

Residents in Stroud Green are really concerned about road safety and have been pushing for more main roads to have 20 mph limits – it is time Haringey started to listen to residents.

Cllr Terry Stacey, Islington Liberal Democrat Leader, adds:

Just weeks ago, the Labour leaders of Islington, Haringey and Hackney promised to work together to improve life for residents living along the borough boundaries. This decision by Haringey makes a mockery of that.

Over our other border, Hackney has only agreed to trial 20mph on major roads shared with Islington. We are now faced with a situation where some of Islington’s busiest roads will remain the most dangerous.

Islington Liberal Democrats have been pushing since 2010 for all the borough’s roads to be included in the 20mph scheme. Sadly, Haringey and Hackney have just stuck their two fingers up at residents and Islington’s leaders have just rolled over.
