Anger as Council veto 20mph limit for Stroud Green Road

by Haringey Lib Dems on 18 July, 2012

Angry local residents have spoken out against Haringey Council vetoing a plan for a 20 mph limit for Stroud Green Road.  The residents were interviewed along with Cllr Richard Wilson on the BBC London radio drive time slot – calling for the Council to the think again.

Islington Council has decided to implement 20mph restrictions on all roads, including Stroud Green Road, but Haringey have been able to veto this because the road is on the boundary between the two Boroughs.  Haringey are currently refusing to implement 20 mph zones without speed humps and other physical measures – despite these often being unpopular with residents.  The Council vetoed the change without any consultation with local residents or councillors – residents and Cllr Wilson only found out via contacts in Islington Council.

The veto is particularly badly timed as residents on adjacent Upper Tollington Park are currently pushing to get a 20mph limit to make their road safer, after years of complaints about speeding near the pedestrian crossing.  Katherine Reece, Ed Butcher and Richard Wilson are calling on the Council to consult with residents and listen to their concerns.  If Islington can go for 20mph limits without humps then Haringey can do the same with a bit of political will.
